Leaders in skincare Black Pearl South Africa has shed light on the importance of wearing sunscreen, not only tailor-made for South Africa's beautiful climate, but for your individual skin type.
From romantic picnics in the garden, to family holidays at the coast, there are so many reasons to love Summer, but beware - the season of warmth can give your skin the cold shoulder. The most common skin ailment reported during the summer months is sunburn. Sunburns can cause long-lasting damage to the skin not only resulting in facial brown spots and skin discolorations; facial red veins and blotchiness; and wrinkled, premature ageing skin, but Malignant Melanoma.
"South Africa has one of the highest skin cancer rates in the world after Australia," says Michelle Roberts, CEO at Black Pearl South Africa. "The south African sun as well as depletion of the ozone layer all increase this risk. Cancers attributable to sun-damage include Melanoma, Basal cell carcinoma and Squamous cell carcinoma. Experts agree there are four aspects to a good sun protection programme - avoid midday sun, sit in the shade whenever possible, use protective clothing (including a wide brimmed hat) and always apply a high factor sunscreen (SPF 30 or higher)."
Black Pearl have recently launched a new generation mineral sun care range that is as luxurious as it is practical. Sea Of Spa pairs the benefits of ancient and natural ingredients rich in minerals with cutting edge science, resulting in radiant, healthy, illuminated skin that is, best of all, completely protected no matter how hot temperatures climb. In two offerings - SPF45 and SPF30 - Sea Of Spa is water resistance and long lasting with both UVA and UVB filters.
"Contrary to what many believe, not all sunscreen is created equally, which is why it's important you choose a brand you can trust, ensure the product is not beyond its expiry date, offers a broad-spectrum or multi spectrum protection and has high quality ingredients," says Michelle. "Some sunscreens work by scattering the light, reflecting it away from your body, while others absorb the UV rays before they reach your skin. SPF refers to blockage of UVB rays only, yet research has shown that ultraviolet A rays (UVA) penetrate deeply into skin and cause wrinkles, and also increases skin cancer risk. This is why a sunscreen needs to offer protection against both UVA and UVB filters."
Michelle explains Sea Of Spa contains ingredients proven to protect against both UVA and UVB rays. "There is no rating to tell you how good a sunscreen is at blocking UVA rays, so when it comes to UVA protection, you need to pay attention to the ingredients," says Michelle. "Look for a sunscreen that contains at least one of the following - ecamsule, avobenzone, oxybenzone, titanium dioxide, sulisobenzone, or zinc oxide, and, if you're going to be exercising, or in the water, it's worth getting a sunscreen resistant to water and sweat. Apply sunscreen liberally every two hours - at least a teaspoon for each limb, front and back of the body and half a teaspoon for the face, neck and ears. You should apply one cupped adult hand (30 to 40 ml) of sunscreen for an adult body."
Although rich and creamy, Sea Of Spa will not clog pores and is easily and quickly absorbed by the skin, leaving a fresh fragrance that lingers. Generous in size, both the SPF45 and the SPF30 are available in 250ml tubes. The revolutionary and unique complex in Sea Of Spa actually treats the skin, while protecting and healing. Sea Of Spa is also the sponsors of the 29th Annual South African Body Boarding Championships - the most nationally anticipated body boarding event of the year. Taking place in Richards Bay, Zululand, in October, the Championships form the largest gathering of body boarders in South Africa. Sea Of Spa will be providing sun protection across the board (so to speak) to more than 160 of the country’s top campaigners including local riders Mark McCarthy and Reinhard du Toit.
"Black Pearl South Africa is one of the top skin care leaders so it just made sense that Sea Of Spa protects our top body boarders as they compete against each other under the gorgeous African sun," says Michelle. "The contest runs from the 4th of October through to the 9th - with coastal temperatures known to soar during this period - so the organisers wanted a sunscreen they could trust. Sea Of Spa was the perfect choice."
Sea Of Spa meets with the strict Australian/ New Zealand standards. Perfect for the outdoor enthusiast, the golfing prodigy, the sun goddess, and the surfer, Sea Of Spa is ideal for each and every South African and suitable for all skin types.
