INTERCARE GIVES CENTURY CITY A STATE OF THE ART MEDICAL CENTRE AND DAY HOSPITAL

Cape Town’s thriving Century City has become a popular place to live, work, shop, and play. With over 50,000 people living and working in the community, Century City is home to the Canal Walk Shopping Centre, Ratanga Junction Theme Park, hotels, restaurants, conference facilities, contemporary residential developments, and office parks. And now, thanks to Intercare and the vision of leading medical specialists, the community finally has its own R70 million state of the art medical centre and day hospital.

Known for its patient-centricity and challenging the status quo, Intercare has equipped the Medical Centre with a high-tech mammography unit in collaboration with a prominent radiology practice. This innovative and unprecedented step is based on the increasing burden of breast cancer in South Africa’s female population.

“Breast cancer is the most common cancer in women, and 1 in 29 women will develop the disease,” says Intercare co-founder and CEO Dr Hendrik Hanekom. “Here in South Africa, more than 60% of women present with lumps larger than 5 cm, which means we have to work harder to provide the means to be able to detect these tumours at much earlier stages.”

Another encouraging innovation from Intercare is its use of high-tech laminar flow operating theatres. A laminar flow theatre is designed with special air ventilation technology that improves hygiene and lowers the risk of post-operative infections, especially for surgical procedures, such as orthopaedic and joint replacement surgery, which require exceptionally sterile conditions.

The inclusion of the laminar flow theatre is a result of Intercare‘s cooperation with its specialists. It was the surgeons who asked for a laminar flow theatre, and Intercare listened. Intercare is patient-centric, but it is also focussed on building strong partnerships with its care partners. Intercare makes sure that its facilities and systems work just as well for the doctors as they do for the patients. It is this approach that attracts top specialists from around the country.

Intercare’s Day Hospital will be home to leading specialists in hand surgery, orthopaedic surgery, plastic surgery, ENT, general surgery, gastroenterology, urology, ophthalmology, gynaecology, maxillofacial surgery and dentistry. Many of these specialists will consult at the facility. Intercare is also incorporating two very established and respected GP practices from the Century City area into its medical centre.

The Intercare Day Hospital Century City has 3 operating theatres, a procedure room, and 24 beds, whilst the Medical Centre has a Centre for Lifestyle Management, a Dis-Chem pharmacy, General Practitioners, and a whole host of health disciplines. These include pathology for blood tests, radiology for X Rays, as well as biokineticists, dieticians, and physiotherapists.

Not only does this make it easy for you to access highly experienced doctors and specialists in one facility, saving you time, money and effort, but it also makes the integration and coordination of your healthcare a reality. In line with the latest international thinking, Intercare has integrated its healthcare services and designed its primary care around patients with similar needs. These three groups of patients are: healthy people; healthy people with a significant event affecting their health; and people with one or more chronic conditions.

As a healthy person, you’ll be able to come into the Intercare Centre for Lifestyle Management for things like breast cancer screenings, and blood pressure and cholesterol tests. As Intercare is the largest provider of Discovery Vitality Wellness Centres in the country, you can now complete almost the full spectrum of Vitality assessments under one roof – whether it’s on an individual basis or as part of a broader corporate wellness offering. The Intercare Medical Centre is also open 7 days a week (including public holidays), and for longer hours, so no matter how busy you are, you’ll have access to high quality and affordable health care services - from wellness management and routine care to urgent and chronic care.

If you’re normally a healthy person but have a significant event or condition which affects your health and you need something like hand surgery, or your tonsils removed, this is where the day hospital can assist. While it’s all high-tech, the day hospital has been designed to be warm, family-friendly, and inviting. It’s not an intimidating place like most hospitals, even for children. The day hospital is not only accessible, but it’s safer because there’s a greatly reduced risk of hospital-acquired infections. It’s also cost effective, with international studies demonstrating that procedures done in day hospitals are 26 to 40% cheaper than the acute counter-parts.

The people who stand to benefit most from Intercare’s integrated services are people with one or more chronic conditions, as they’re the ones who suffer most from a fragmented healthcare system. If you have diabetes for example, you can walk into Intercare’s Centre for Lifestyle Management where your Health Coach will work very closely with you, your primary care physician, and your specialists to coordinate your care and maintain your health so that you don’t land up in hospital or ICU. The focus is on multidisciplinary, team-based care with measured outcomes.

Dr Hanekom says that it’s this kind of thinking and healthcare innovation that could change the face of South Africa’s healthcare system. “It’s astounding to think that the most high risk patients – those with one or more chronic conditions – make up 10% of the population, but account for 50% of the total healthcare expenditure. If we can change that, we can have a massive impact on South African healthcare, and the costs thereof.”

With 4 day hospitals, 3 sub-acute and rehabilitation hospitals and 16 medical centres, Intercare has always had a vision to maximise value for patients. Intercare is set on providing quality private healthcare that is more affordable and more accessible to more South Africans.

Dr Hanekom’s vision is to create a legacy, and with the latest Intercare Medical Centre and Day Hospital in Century City, Intercare is doing exactly that.
